Catspaw Authentic Entertainment - v ery special entertainment for special events. Check out our workshops - especially the range of story workshops. Or make your party an event to go down in history with one of our shows from the Dark Ages, Medieval, Viking, Elizabethan periods. Our wedding listings offer something a little different for stag and hen and wedding entertainments.

Age groups

Some are suited to younger children (eg: circus fun with Elvio), some to older children or college students (eg: Introduction to sound engineering), some to adults (sound engineering for live bands) some to all ages (eg: drumming). Please specify the age range your participants will cover and the workshops you are interested in and we can tell you if they are suitable or can be adapted to your needs.

Historic details

For our historic workshops the workshop leaders will, wherever possible, be dressed completely in appropriate period clothing (from shoes to hair) and props will be accurate replicas ( eg: instruments, aquamanile). Some workshops may use modern props in part but it will be made clear that these are not intended to be historically accurate on the odd occasion where this is the case (eg: the feast workshop illustrates the number of courses with plastic items of food and other modern props for reasons of health and expense)

We recommend groups of 20-30 for childrens workshops but can accomodate more where necessary and recognise many schools like to have two classes at a time involved.

Length of workshops

Most workshops, unless otherwise stated, run for 45 minutes to one hour, mainly because that's what people normally book. However many of them have additional material already researched which we have had to leave out to keep it down to an hour, some of it wonderful information which is just begging to be included. Therefore they are well suited to an hour and a half or two hour sessions, even half day on some workshops.

Medieval feasting and festivities/Life, in particular, could extend to a full day's project with the addition of medieval music, dance and expanding the stories element.

More extensive work

We are open to planning full project/teacher support sessions around many of the workshops. A team deliver an inspirational workshop at the beginning of an project, leave worksheets and additional ideas with teacher and pupils and return for a further session during the final week of the project for another session. A great opportunity for pupils to demonstrate, and realise, how much they've learned.

We can also offer a full weeks project on some of the workshops where the workshop leader works with one or more groups over the duration of a whole week, covering all that would have been in a standard workshop and much more, sometimes coaching for relevant performances at the end of the week. Great for drumming and storytelling or similar.

Worksheets/follow on projects

At the end of a workshop we can provide teachers with worksheets with suggestions of follow on activities - this is available as a standard part of many of the more obviously schools workshops. (Medieval Feasting and Festivities already has a full spin off project guide.

Booking multiple workshops

For many of our workshops it works out more economical if you book two or more runs of the same workshop in succession (we ask for a minimum break of 15 minutes to allow workshop leaders to gather and refresh themselves between workshops) as a large part of the cost is getting the workshop leaders and kit prepared and to you. If you book a full day we ask that you give our workshop leaders a lunchbreak too though you needn't necessarily feed them.
